How to make ecobricks with filled PET bottles


  • Clean, dry PET plastic bottles (any size)
  • Non-recyclable and non-hazardous inorganic waste (see list below)
  • Scissors or cutter
  • Funnel (optional)
  • Stick or rod (optional)
  • Permanent marker (optional)

Waste that you can use to fill:

  • Plastic bags
  • Candy and snack wrappers
  • Aluminum foil
  • Plastic caps
  • Straws
  • Cepillos de dientes
  • Empty medication containers (without labels)
  • Adhesive tapes
  • Balloons
  • Sponges
  • Tetra Pak (properly washed and dried)
  • Synthetic fabrics
  • Any other plastic that cannot be recycled


1. Prepare the bottle:

  • Wash the bottle well PET with soap and water, and let it dry completely.
  • Remove the label and any glue residue.
  • If the bottle has a wide spout or cap, you can carefully cut it to make filling easier.

2. Fill the bottle:

  • Start with large plastic pieces and compact them well to make the most of the space.
  • You can use a stick or rod to help compact the material.
  • Do not fill the bottle to the top, leave a space of about 2 cm free.

3. Close the bottle:

  • You can cover the bottle with the original cap or with a piece of cloth or plastic.
  • Make sure the bottle is tightly closed so the material does not leak.

4. Label the ecobrick (optional):

  • You can write on the bottle the date of production, the type of waste it contains and your name.


  • Find a clean, dry space to store the ecobricks.
  • You can stack them or place them on shelves.
  • When you have a sufficient number of ecobricks, you can search for projects in your community to use them.
